It was created by Carmen Hijosa, who previously worked as a consultant in the leather items industry in Philippines. During his stay in the country, he realized that leather was not only becoming lacking and more expensive, but that the processing of the material contaminated very much, so he tried to find a less polluting alternative.
This woman found inspiration in traditional embroidered garments from Philippines that are made with the fibers of pineapple. These fibers can be used to make a material like felt and from the basis for the creation of Piñatex.
To make Piñatex vegetable leather, the fibers of pineapple waste are cut into layers and it will be processed like a textile. It can be created with different thicknesses and textures very similar to leather. Approximately 16 pineapples are needed to produce one square meter of fabric. This fiber is much cheaper than producing leather.
This material has attracted the attention of some important brands such as Puma or Camper for shoes and handbags but companies that make upholstery are also interested.

The development of Piñatex continues in Spain and the United Kingdom and is being researched so that it reaches other types of applications such as for bandages, since it has antibacterial properties.
I leave you with a video about this product. And you, would you buy something made of this material?
